Chapter 4

Cal woke slowly from a deep sleep. As the dawn light slipped into the window, he opened his eyes and checked his surroundings. This was definitely not his apartment.

Josh’s handmade furniture gave the room a homey feel that instantly put Cal at ease in the unfamiliar space. Last night he really hadn’t taken the chance to admire Josh’s work inside the bedroom.

The previous night came back to him in a rush as the warm body next to him snuggled closer to his side and nestled his face into Cal’s chest.

Fuck.

He hadn’t meant to sleep with Josh. He’d meant to let the guy down easy. But he hadn’t been able to resist Josh’s kissable lips and easy smile, especially after the delicious dinner he’d cooked.

The night had been amazing. They’d made love twice. No wonder Cal had fallen asleep with Josh wrapped in his arms. It was like Josh was made to fit at his side.

He shook his head. No. Just because things were great now didn’t mean they would stay that way. Eventually their connection would fizzle out, and there would be a messy breakup. Like every other relationship he’d had. Or witnessed his friends have. He didn’t need that heartache. Best to just end this now.

For a brief moment, while they’d made love he’d let himself imagine actually going out with Josh. Dates to the movies. Taking walks in the park. It would be wonderful. For a while.

Then Josh would get tired of him working so much, or coming home with grease under his fingernails. Eventually Josh’s eyes would wander, and he would find someone better looking, skinnier, more fit, and Cal would be pushed to the wayside. Just like what happened with William.

Cal took one last look at Josh cuddled against him. Leave it as a one-night thing and forget about it. Neither one of them would get their heart broken, and they could probably still be friends. Guys had one-night stands all the time, right?

With the smallest movements he could manage, Cal pushed away from Josh and then slowly rose from the bed. He located his pants, pulled them on, and was almost out the door when Josh’s voice stopped him.

“Good morning.”

Cal turned. Josh’s smile lit up the entire room, and Cal filled with guilt.

“Hey.”

“I don’t suppose you’re on your way to get us some breakfast?” Josh chuckled as he leaned against the headboard.

“Um. Actually, no, I was going to head home.”

“Oh.” Josh’s face fell as he met Cal’s eyes. “Do you want to go out for breakfast with me? Or maybe get together later and catch a movie?”

Cal slipped his shirt over his head and weighed his words carefully. “I don’t think that’s a good idea.” Smooth. Real smooth. Cal wanted to crawl into a hole. Did they really have to do this? Wasn’t him sneaking out in the wee hours of the morning a big enough clue for Josh?

Josh scrunched his eyebrows together and pulled the bedsheet higher over his chest. “Um. Okay. Can I call you sometime?”

Christ.
